Before a road trip, know how much fuel you need and what the drive will cost, one way or return. Enter the distance, your car’s consumption and the fuel price.
Consumption can be in L/100 km, km per litre or miles per gallon (MPG), and the cost can be split between passengers.
How to use it
- Enter the trip distance and tick round trip if needed.
- Enter your car’s consumption and its unit.
- Enter the fuel price and number of passengers.
- Read the total cost and each passenger’s share.
Features
- 3 consumption units: L/100 km, km/L, MPG.
- Round-trip option.
- Split the cost between passengers.
- Cost per km or mile.
Tip: Highway consumption is usually lower than in town, but speed, air conditioning and load increase it. Add a 10% margin for long trips.
Example: a return trip
240 km each way (480 km round trip), a car using 6.5 L/100 km, fuel at 13 per litre: fuel needed 480 × 6.5 ÷ 100 = 31.2 L, cost 31.2 × 13 = 405.6. With 4 travellers, about 101 each.
Converting consumption units
| From | To L/100 km |
|---|---|
| km/L | 100 ÷ value (e.g. 15 km/L = 6.7 L/100 km) |
| US miles per gallon (MPG) | 235.2 ÷ value (e.g. 30 MPG = 7.8 L/100 km) |
Saving fuel on long trips
- Keep a steady, moderate speed — high speed raises consumption noticeably.
- Check tyre pressure before leaving; under-inflated tyres burn more fuel.
- Drop unnecessary weight and remove an unused roof rack.
