Where should page numbers go?
| Document | Suggested position | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Thesis or university paper | Bottom centre | “1”, skipping the cover |
| Business report or quote | Bottom left or right | “Page 1 of 10” |
| Double-sided book | Bottom centre | “1” |
| Document that will be printed and unstapled | Top corner | “1 / 10”, so a missing page is obvious |
Tips
- For papers with a cover and table of contents, start numbering at the introduction and set the start number your teacher or institution expects.
- Dark grey at a small size (9–11) keeps numbers readable without drawing attention.
- Number the file after merging and reordering — later changes scramble the numbers.

“Add page numbers” runs entirely in your browser using trusted open-source libraries. Your files are never uploaded to a server and no copy is kept, so your documents stay private. It is free and needs no sign-up.
Tip: For double-sided books, center the number at the bottom.
