Fair groups, no arguments
Splitting a class by hand takes time and the same friends always end up together. This tool shuffles names into balanced groups — the biggest and smallest group never differ by more than one student. Showing the draw on screen makes it feel fair.
How to use it
- Paste the names, one per line (copy them from your class list).
- Split by “Number of groups” (e.g. 4) or by “Students per group” (pairs, trios…).
- Tick “Pick a leader” to have one student per group organise and present.
- Click “Split randomly”. Copy the result, or click again for a new split.
When to use it
- Group work, projects and presentations.
- Sports teams.
- Class quizzes and competitions.
- Lab sessions or field trips.
Teaching tip
Random grouping breaks up closed circles and gets students working with new classmates. When groups need balanced levels, split randomly then swap one or two students, or split each level band separately and combine.
