The product title is the most important factor in appearing in store and search engine results, and it is also what shoppers use to decide whether to click or scroll past. A weak title means a product nobody sees, however good it is.
Start with what customers search for
Put the main keyword at the beginning of the title. If people search for “kids coloring book”, start with that rather than your brand name. The first words carry more weight for algorithms and remain visible even when the title is cut off on mobile.
A practical title formula
Product type + main feature + target audience + distinctive detail
Example: “Animal Coloring Book for Kids Ages 3–6 – 40 Printable Pages, PDF in A4 and Letter”.
Watch the title length
Every platform has a character limit and every search engine a limited display space. Google usually shows 50 to 60 characters of a page title and truncates the rest. Marketplaces allow longer titles, but the visible part in mobile results is short. Use our word and character counter with a character limit to see when your title exceeds the visible space.
Common title mistakes
- Keyword stuffing: repeating the same word in several forms makes the title unreadable and may be penalized by algorithms.
- ALL CAPS: in English titles it looks like shouting. Use our case converter to switch to Title Case.
- Empty marketing phrases: words like “best” or “unmissable deal” don’t help search and don’t inform.
- Missing key details: size, quantity and age range help customers decide straight from the search results.
Test and improve
Watch each product’s click-through rate in your store analytics. If a product gets many impressions but few clicks, the title or main image needs work. Change one element at a time and wait two weeks before judging.
Multilingual titles
If you sell to customers in different countries, write the title in the buyer’s language and don’t rely on literal machine translation. The words people search with sometimes differ from the direct translation.
Summary
Start with the word customers search for, add the details that help them decide, keep a suitable length and avoid stuffing. A clear, accurate title serves both the shopper and the algorithm.
